What’s Your Excuse?

Four reasons adults avoid college (and how EICC can get you on track!)

You’ve always been interested in helping people, or computers, or nursing, but you’re not sure if you can handle going to college at this point. You don’t have time. You’re afraid of math. Your cat wants you home at night. The excuses are endless.

It’s really never too late to plan a successful college experience.  Like almost all other important goals in life, careful preparation is the key. Eastern Iowa Community Colleges has tools to help you not only start but FINISH your education goal!

1. “I didn’t do well in high school.”

Who you were in high school has little relevance to who you are today. Your values, interests, and yes, your skills, have evolved. You might be a great student today though you weren’t when you were younger. You’re more motivated. You have a lot of great experience to draw upon.  You’re more mature.

Our goal is to help you succeed as a student . . . and well beyond.  That’s why we have so many programs to support your efforts – tutoring, help with study and testing skills, writing and math labs, and more.

2. “I can’t afford it.”

Eastern Iowa Community Colleges have tuition rates among the lowest in the state of Iowa. Financial aid and scholarships are available, as are payment plan options. We will guide you through the process to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) through which you can qualify for grants, a low interest loan or other assistance.  Our colleges also have payment plans allowing you to pay your bill in installments.

EICC also has a reduced tuition program that may benefit you:

Reduced tuition for NEW students taking an evening class

New students who register for an evening class this summer or fall term will receive a 50% tuition discount on that initial class!  This reduction is available for any evening class with a start time of 5 p.m. or after and that has official campus-based meeting times.  A ‘new student’ is a student who is first-time enrolled with Eastern Iowa Community Colleges post graduation.  For more information, visit eicc.edu/eveningoffer.

3. “I don’t have the time.”

We’re all doing a million things and maybe feeling like there’s just not enough time to check them all off your list. You will probably find that, when you begin learning material that resonates with you, you will have a lot more energy and time to get the work done than you thought.

Community colleges know all about busy adults. Evening, short-term and online classes can fit your schedule. We have evening classes or classes in 8 week blocks so you’re taking just one class at a time.   We also have degrees which can be completed exclusively online – allowing for complete flexibility with your work schedule.

4. “I don’t know what I want to study.”

You know that you want to earn a degree in something, you just aren’t sure what that something is yet! Do you keep putting off college until the bolt of inspiration comes?

One way to start is by making an appointment  to visit with a college advisor.  They can talk with you about our many program and learning options as well as direct you to our colleges’ Career Services office where you can take an assessment that will help you figure out your interests and the types of careers that suit you.

Have you run out of excuses yet?

Now get out there and start living the life you want.
