How Are You Getting Ready for College?

eicc_getting_readyYou’ve heard the play on words – “How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, kid, practice.” Making decisions for college is a lot like that. It’s an idea you need to try on for size and spend some time with. Here are seven easy steps you can walk through to get on a path that will confidently lead you to your college decision:

1. Share the idea

Let everyone know that you’re going to college and you need their help. Seek advice, support, and make connections.

2. Set goals and push yourself

Working a little harder today will make college even easier. Pull the information you need together, set a date, and make time to review your options.

3. Explore careers

Take time to research careers and discover which college majors will move you toward your dream job. We have a great tool for that at eicc.edu/careercoach.

4. Find the right fit

Find out what kind of college is the best match for you and your career goals. Schedule a college visit so you can experience campus life, or call one of our Admissions Coordinators to sit down and talk about your plans.

5. Get in

If you’re still in high school, focus on academic involvement and get involved in student activities. Prepare for and take a college admission test. If you’re currently out of school, get a copy of your high school (or previous college) transcripts. Compete the college application – you can find ours at
eicc.edu/apply.

6. Line up some cash

Plan now for college costs. Do some searching and apply for financial aid and scholarships. Not all scholarships are just for straight-A students. Get more information on what’s out there and be resourceful. It also can help to use a budget worksheet to calculate costs. You can download a free copy at our website.
